Jake Murray of Diner Pets says Pet Sounds Music Festival is all about giving local artists and musicians a different way to showcase their talents.
“I think bands are in like a really weird spot right now,” says Murray, who thinks the changes to how bands have to engage in what he calls the “content era” have changed the game of what it means to be an artist.
“I think it’s important to be able to create sort of alternative spotlights and showcases and ways where people can come together to discover local art and local music,” says Murray, who works with co-creator DJ Janky to curate the festival.
The organizers of Pet Sounds Music Festival want to bring back the old-school community celebration vibe of live, local music in the post-COVID era. 14 bands over two days, with DJ sets and other entertainment experiences, aim to entertain audiences who enjoy different sounds.
“What we try to cultivate at Pet Sounds is like a very diverse night of music,” said Murray in an interview with Radio Free Brooklyn this month. “So there’s kind of a little bit of something for everybody.”
Murray says affordability is important not just for concertgoers but for artists as well, and that booking fees and other costs can make it harder for some artists. The festival creates more opportunities for musicians in the scene to be heard and discovered.
“In some ways, like while we are trying to make a community event that is really fun, I think we see it a lot like a service as well,” said Murray.
14 bands will hit the stage beginning at 6:30 PM. Murray says each band is on his radar, either as a long-time fan, a collaborator, or someone he’s heard around the scene.
“I have seen kind of like the lay of the land of artists from around the city, says Murray, who has been playing in New York for the past five years. “And what we try to cultivate in this festival are the best of the best bands that we have seen that we know.”
Friday’s bands include Pain Don’t Hurt, Wince, Pat Faking, Self-Help, Local Weatherman, Frizleschats, Bounty and DJ Janky closing out with a dance party set.
Saturday’s bands include WTCHCRFT, Fawn Ridge, Janna Jamison, Diner Pets, Uncle Skunk, Prophet II, Mike Leão and B.L.I.X.
